Freedom Horses, LLC operates on a year-round basis, with clients generally
visiting the Ranch for hour-long sessions of individual, equine-facilitated
therapy. Each client is assigned a team of staff members, who plan the client’s
sessions. (see Professional Staff section.) The team customizes each session,
based upon the individual needs and diagnosis of the client.
Through their individual sessions, clients are offered varied activities involving interaction with horses, including grooming, herd observation, “Natural horsemanship” exercise and games, and learning to ride. Each activity intentionally provides opportunities for hands-on experiences that stimulate exploration and develops an understanding of one’s self and one’s life journey; in relationships, communication styles, and coping skills. Much of the direct work by clients with horses is based on the “Principles of Natural Horsemanship.” Pat Parelli, a nationally recognized expert in communication between horses and humans, developed these principles. His program emphasizes the importance of communication and respect in all relationships. The principles learned through the Parelli program are transferable from the horse-human relationship to parent/child interactions, as well as to the child’s relationship with self, peers, and society. The adult client’s relationships within society may be improved and strengthened as he/she applies the learned skills at work, with friends or within the family structure.
Each client also may participate in two-hour, half-day or full day sessions involving trail riding. Family members may be invited to participate in sessions, since clients whose families are involved have demonstrated the most positive and lasting results in similar programs. An Equine Family Facilitator may be used to smooth the progress of the Client’s treatment. Family members can be assisted with their riding ability and taught the supportive and technical language and communication styles so that they may function safely and effectively within the program.
